20 basic etiquette points to follow when you are training at JIU LIVRE.
1. Hygiene: Always come to class clean with a clean gi (kimono). Trim your nails regularly. Avoid heavy perfumes or colognes.
2. Arrival Time: Aim to arrive early to class. Being late disrupts the flow of the class and can be seen as disrespectful.
3. Uniform: Always wear the appropriate uniform. In some schools, white gis are preferred.
4. Safety: Safety is the primary concern. Do not execute any dangerous techniques that you haven't been taught in class.
5. Bowing: Bow when you enter and leave the mat as a sign of respect.
6. Respect the Instructor: Always show respect to your instructors and coaches. Listen when they speak and follow their instructions.
7. Tapping: If you are caught in a submission, tap early. It's better to tap early and learn from your mistakes than to get injured.
8. Intensity: Keep the intensity of your sparring at an appropriate level. Remember, this is a learning environment, not a competition.
9. Respect Your Training Partners: Treat your training partners with respect. They're not your enemies but people who help you grow and improve.
10. No shoes on the Mat: This helps keep the mat clean.
11. Coaching: Avoid coaching other students unless you're an instructor. It can confuse them or clash with what the coach is teaching.
12. Avoid Unnecessary Talking: During class time, avoid unnecessary talking. Focus on the training and instructions.
13. Leave Your Ego at the Door: Everyone taps in BJJ. Don't let it hurt your pride. Instead, learn from it and improve.
14. Line Up According to Rank: When lining up at the beginning or end of class, line up according to rank. This is a traditional practice in many martial arts, including BJJ.
15. Inform the Instructor of Injuries: If you are injured or have any health conditions, make sure to inform your instructor before class begins.
16. No food or drink on the mat: Apart from water, avoid taking food or drinks onto the mat.
17. Help Clean Up: If possible, help clean up the gym after class. It's a sign of respect for the facility and the community.
18. Do Not Disturb Other Classes: If there are other classes going on simultaneously, do not disturb them.
19. Disclose Relevant Medical History: If you have any significant medical history, disclose it to your instructor to avoid any serious injury.
